Who is Your Ideal Customer, and How Well Do You Know Them?

Do you know the ideal customer for your business? According to marketing professional Cath Connell, this is about understanding who you want to serve, why you want to serve them, and what their responses are likely to be.

The ‘Who’

This is deciding who you wish to serve, based on your own preferences and desires. For example, you might want to choose a very specific demographic that matches your skills and talents, and where you can make a real difference.

The ‘Why’

Connell suggests once you know who you want to serve, you can develop your products and services around their needs, problems and desires, rather than the other way around (which is the traditional approach). This enables you to develop very customised solutions and build a loyal base, and to connect with your clients on a deeper level.

The ‘What’

This refers to knowing what your ideal customer’s emotional response is. People buy products and services for all kinds of reasons. Knowing and understanding how they respond allows you to serve them better.

Connell also suggests taking a more positive approach to advertising – inspiring customers, rather than playing into their fears.

So if you’d like a better understanding of the ideal customer for your small business, this approach might be very helpful!
